Why a Missing Ground Can Cause Problems
Common-Mode Voltage Limits: RS485 transceivers can only tolerate a certain voltage difference between the signal lines and their local ground (typically between −7V and +12V). If the ground potential between your PC (USB side) and the target device drifts too far apart, it exceeds this threshold, corrupting data or frying the chip.
Noise and Interference: Without a common reference, electromagnetic interference (EMI) affects both lines differently, turning common-mode noise into differential noise that disrupts communication.
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD): A lack of a drainage path for static buildup puts your adapter and connected equipment at risk.
How to Fix or Work Around the Problem
Depending on your specific setup, you can use several methods to address a missing GND line:
Check the PCB for a Hidden GND Pad:
Open the plastic casing of your USB adapter. Even if the external screw terminal only has two slots (A and B), the printed circuit board (PCB) inside often has an exposed GND pin or solder pad near the USB port or the transceiver chip. You can carefully solder a wire to this pad and run it to your device's ground.
Rely on Shared Power/Earth Ground (Short Distances Only):
If both your PC and the target RS485 device are plugged into the same AC power strip or grounded wall outlets, they may already share a common earth ground through their power supplies. For very short distances (under 1–2 meters) on a workbench, communication will often work fine without an explicit GND wire.
Is the Target Device Isolated?
If your target device is battery-powered or galvanically isolated, voltage drifting is less of an immediate danger over short runs, but noise susceptibility remains high.
Upgrade to a 3/4-Wire Adapter:
If you are running cables over long distances (more than a few meters) or in an industrial environment with heavy machinery, a 2-wire setup without GND is inherently unreliable. It is best to replace the adapter with a proper 3/4-wire unit (A, B, and GND, opt. +5V supply).
